2009 Women's History Month

Each year the Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women honors women who have made indelible impressions on the Jacksonville community through their positive efforts.  Women are selected for their contributions of lasting value to the community.

Dawn Lockhart, President of Family Foundations was selected as one of four honorees for 2009.  She, along with Sandy Barata of University of Florida, Carol Hladki of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and Roslyn Mixon Phillips of the City of Jacksonville, were honored at a reception at the Thomas G. Carpenter Library at the University of North Florida.

Honorees reflect a cross-section of ethnic-cultural groups in the Jacksonville Community.  The list of past honorees reads like a Who's Who of Prominent Jacksonville Women.   From Left to Right in the picture below

  • Roslyn Mixon Phillips is the Chief Community Officer and Director of Recreation and Community
    Services Department, City of Jacksonville.
  • Dawn Lockhart is the President and CEO, Family Foundations.
  • Carol Hladki is the Director of Police Services, Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
  • Sandy Barata is the Administrative Director, Department of Pediatrics, University of Florida,

The Commission's purpose is to develop a public consciousness of the talents of women, regardless of race, color or creed, as equal partners in the private, business and civic community; to encourage women to become actively involved in matters pertaining to the community; to work toward utilization of capable women in roles of leadership; and to serve as a source of information for women on legal and human rights, economic equality, health and discrimination.

The mayor appoints and the City Council approves members for this advisory commission that develops public awareness of the talents of women, encourages women to become actively involved in community leadership and acts as a resource for women in the areas of education and employment.
